Frequently Asked Questions
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Is spray foam insulation worth it in Florida?
In the right places: roof decks over attics with ducts, metal buildings, block walls during remodels and new framing. For a vented attic with no ducts, sealing and blowing loose fill is usually the better value.
What is the cost of closed-cell spray foam insulation per square foot?
HomeGuide lists closed-cell foam at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed, and open cell at $1.50 to $3.50. Depth, access and prep change the total; your written estimate is the real number.
How much does spray foam cost for a whole house?
National guides put whole-house spray foam at $8,000 to $20,000 (HomeGuide) or $10,000 to $30,000 (Fixr). Most homes do not need foam everywhere, so many jobs cost far less.
Does Lakeland Electric offer an insulation rebate?
Yes. It lists a $300 attic insulation rebate when the attic starts at R-19 or less and ends at R-30 or more, with an inspection before work begins.
What R-value does Florida require in an attic?
Florida's 8th Edition energy code lists R-38 for ceilings in climate zone 2, which includes Polk County.
Closed cell vs open cell: which do I need?
Open cell on roof decks for sealed attics and in interior walls. Closed cell on metal buildings, block walls with shallow furring and where moisture is possible.
Who removes and installs new insulation in Lakeland?
We do both: remove damaged or contaminated insulation, seal the attic and install new insulation to a written target.
How do I choose an insulation company in Polk County?
Get at least two written quotes listing material, thickness and R-value for each area. Ask how ducts, ventilation and cure time are handled. Compare scope, not just totals.
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Is spray foam insulation worth it in Florida?
In the right places, yes: roof decks over attics with ducts, metal buildings, block walls being furred out, and new framing. For a vented attic with no ducts, sealing and blowing loose fill is usually the better value.
What is the cost of closed-cell spray foam per square foot?
HomeGuide lists closed-cell foam at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed, compared with $1.50 to $3.50 for open cell. Depth and access change the final price.
Does a foamed attic need ventilation?
A properly sealed attic with foam on the roof deck is unvented by design. It needs the right foam depth and attention to moisture and combustion appliances. We check those before quoting.
How long do we stay out after spraying?
HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours, and longer if the product instructions require it.
Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions
Does Lakeland Electric pay for attic insulation?
Lakeland Electric lists a $300 attic insulation rebate for residential customers whose attic starts at R-19 or less and ends at R-30 or more. An inspection is required before work starts, and the rebate is limited to one per location.
How much attic insulation does a Lakeland house need?
Florida's code lists R-38 for ceilings in zone 2. The Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an empty attic in zone 2, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.
Who removes and installs new insulation in Lakeland?
We do both: remove damaged or contaminated insulation, seal the attic, and install new insulation to a written target.
Should I add a radiant barrier?
It can help in a hot attic with ducts. Sealing and enough insulation come first; we can discuss a radiant barrier on the visit.
Concrete Block Wall Insulation Questions
Can you insulate block walls without removing drywall?
Not well with spray foam. The usual time is during a remodel, when the drywall is off and the furring is exposed.
What R-value does Florida require for block walls?
The Insulation Institute's summary of the 8th Edition code lists a mass wall value between R-4 and R-6 in zone 2, depending on placement. Frame walls are R-13.
Is it worth insulating a west-facing block wall?
It is often the hottest wall in the house in the afternoon. If you are remodeling that room, foam behind the furring is worth considering.
Blown-In Insulation Questions
Is blown-in insulation good for Florida attics?
Yes, for vented attics, especially without ducts. It is affordable and reaches high R-values. Sealing the ceiling first is what makes it work.
Does blown-in qualify for the Lakeland Electric rebate?
The rebate does not specify a material. Lakeland Electric requires the attic to start at R-19 or less and end at R-30 or more, with an inspection before work starts.
Fiberglass or cellulose?
Both work. Fiberglass handles humidity and roof leaks a little better; cellulose packs denser and blocks more air. We will recommend one for your attic.
Metal Building & Barn Insulation Questions
How do I stop my metal barn from dripping?
Keep humid air off the steel. Closed-cell foam on the underside of the roof and walls does that.
Will foam make my shop cooler?
Yes, it cuts heat coming through the panels. A working shop still needs ventilation or cooling.
Can you foam over old blanket insulation?
Usually the old facing must come off or be well attached so foam can bond. We check and quote removal if needed.
Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Who removes and installs new insulation in Lakeland?
We do both: remove damaged insulation, seal the attic and install new insulation to a written target.
Do I have to remove old insulation before adding more?
Only if it is wet, contaminated, moldy or suspect, or if it blocks air sealing.
How long does it take?
Most attic removals are a one-day job, with new insulation the same day or the next.
