When Blown-In Is the Right Call

Blown-in insulation is loose fiberglass or cellulose fed through a hose by a machine. In an attic it is spread evenly to depth; in closed frame walls it is packed tightly through small holes. For most Polk County attics, especially vented attics without ducts, blown-in over a sealed ceiling is the most cost-effective upgrade there is.

Attic top-ups

Florida's 8th Edition code lists R-38 for ceilings in climate zone 2, and many older homes have far less. HomeGuide puts a blown-in attic at $900 to $3,600, and Fixr lists $1,750 to $5,500 for about 1,500 square feet. If you are a Lakeland Electric customer with R-19 or less now, bringing the attic to R-30 or more may qualify for its $300 attic rebate after the required pre-inspection.

Fiberglass or cellulose

Fiberglass is light, does not absorb water readily and does not settle much. Cellulose is recycled paper treated with fire retardant; it packs densely and blocks air better in walls. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. In a humid climate, we pay close attention to roof leaks before choosing cellulose, since it holds water if wetted.

Frame walls

Wood-frame walls in older homes, additions and gable ends can be dense-packed through small holes without tearing them out. HomeGuide lists dense-pack cellulose at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot.

Seal first

Loose fill does not stop air. We seal the attic floor before blowing, and we keep soffit vents open with baffles so the attic still breathes.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Is blown-in insulation good for Florida attics?

Yes, for vented attics, especially without ducts. It is affordable and reaches high R-values. Sealing the ceiling first is what makes it work.

Does blown-in qualify for the Lakeland Electric rebate?

The rebate does not specify a material. Lakeland Electric requires the attic to start at R-19 or less and end at R-30 or more, with an inspection before work starts.

Fiberglass or cellulose?

Both work. Fiberglass handles humidity and roof leaks a little better; cellulose packs denser and blocks more air. We will recommend one for your attic.
